# Low water pressure in the shower: how to fix it

Updated: 2026-10-24 · https://pros411.com/en/guides/plumbers/low-water-pressure-shower

## Short answer

First check if the sinks have good pressure. If only the shower is weak, the shower head is usually clogged with minerals. Tie a bag of white vinegar around it so the nozzles soak for a few hours or overnight. Then scrub them with an old toothbrush and run the water. If the pressure is low everywhere, or only on the hot side, call a plumber.

## How to fix low water pressure in the shower

1. **A weak spray? Check the sinks first.** Open the bathroom sink. If it has good pressure, the problem is in the shower itself, most often the shower head.
2. **Mineral buildup clogs the nozzles.** Hard water leaves a white crust in the little holes. Fewer open holes means a weaker spray.
3. **Soak it in a bag of vinegar overnight.** Fill a plastic bag with white vinegar, slip it over the head and tie it with a rubber band so the nozzles sit in the vinegar.
4. **Rub the nozzles with an old toothbrush.** Remove the bag, scrub the face of the head and rub soft rubber nozzles with your finger. Run hot water for a minute to flush out the loose bits.
5. **Full pressure again.** Still weak? Unscrew the head and rinse the small screen where it meets the pipe. If the head is fine, the valve or the pipes need a plumber.

## If cleaning the head does not help

- Only the hot side is weak: the water heater may be full of sediment, or a valve on it is partly closed.
- The whole house is weak: check that the main water valve is fully open, then call a plumber or the water utility.
- The pressure dropped after a cold snap or work on the pipes: a pipe or valve may be damaged.
- A worn cartridge in the shower valve can choke the flow. A plumber can replace it.

## What not to do

- Do not soak brass, nickel or painted finishes in vinegar for hours. Check the care instructions, or keep the soak short.
- Do not poke the nozzles with metal pins: they tear soft rubber nozzles.
- Do not drill out the flow restrictor. It limits how much water the head uses, and without it the hot water runs out faster.

## When to call a plumber

- The pressure is still low after you clean the shower head.
- Low pressure in the whole house, or a sudden drop.
- Only the hot water is weak.
- You see water stains near the shower or on the ceiling below.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why is my shower pressure low but the sink is fine?

The problem is in the shower: usually a head clogged with minerals, or its screen. Less often a worn cartridge in the shower valve.

### How do I clean a clogged shower head without removing it?

Tie a plastic bag of white vinegar around it with a rubber band so the nozzles soak for a few hours or overnight. Then scrub the nozzles and run the water.

### Can a water heater cause low pressure in the shower?

Yes, if only the hot water is weak. Sediment in the tank or a partly closed valve on the heater can restrict the hot side.

### Should I remove the flow restrictor from my shower head?

Better not. It limits water use, and without it your hot water runs out sooner. If the spray is weak, clean the head or replace it with a better low-flow model.

### Why did my water pressure suddenly drop?

A sudden drop in the whole house can be a leak, a problem in the street or a valve that got partly closed. Check that the main valve is fully open and call a plumber if it stays low.
