Short answer
Start with the air filter: a clogged one is the most common cause. Then open every vent all the way and move furniture, rugs and boxes off the vents and the return grilles. Weak everywhere, with ice on the copper lines or the coil? Set the thermostat to "Off" with the fan "On" so it thaws. If the air stays weak, call a technician.
How to fix weak airflow from the vents
1Barely any air from the vents
The AC runs, but the vents only breathe. Check if it is one room or every vent: that tells you where to look.
Read all the steps
- Barely any air from the vents. The AC runs, but the vents only breathe. Check if it is one room or every vent: that tells you where to look.
- Replace a dirty air filter. Slide out the filter at the indoor unit or the return grille. If it is gray, put in a new one of the same size, arrow toward the unit.
- Open the vents and clear the returns. Open every vent all the way. Move boxes, rugs and furniture off the vents and off the big return grilles that pull air in.
- Ice on the coil? Off, fan On. Weak air everywhere plus frost on the copper lines or the coil means it froze. Set it to "Off" with the fan "On" and let it thaw.
- Strong air again. Back to "Cool" once it is dry. Still weak, or only one room? A duct may be loose or crushed, and that is a job for a technician.
- Still not fixed? Call an HVAC contractor Especially if: the air is still weak with a new filter and open vents.

One room or the whole house?
Weak air from every vent points to the filter, a frozen coil, a dirty blower or a blower motor that is failing. Weak air in one or two rooms points to a closed damper or a crushed or loose duct. Rooms at the end of a long duct run also get less. The checks in the animation cover the common causes; the rest need a technician.
What not to do
- Do not close the vents in rooms you do not use. It raises the pressure in the ducts and can cut the airflow everywhere.
- Do not chip or scrape ice off the coil or the lines.
- Do not open the blower door of the indoor unit while it has power.
- Do not keep a very fine filter if the airflow dropped right after you switched to it.
When to call an HVAC technician
- The air is still weak with a new filter and open vents.
- The coil freezes again after it thaws.
- One room gets little or no air.
- The blower hums, squeals or does not start.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the airflow from my vents so weak?
Most often a dirty air filter. Closed or blocked vents and returns, a frozen coil, a dirty blower, a failing blower motor or leaky ducts can also cause it.
Why is no air coming out of one vent?
The vent or a damper in the duct may be closed, or the duct to that room is crushed or disconnected. Open the vent fully; if nothing changes, call a technician.
Can a dirty filter cause weak airflow?
Yes, it is the most common cause. A clogged filter starves the blower, so less air comes out of every vent. Check it monthly while you run the AC.
Should I close vents in rooms I do not use?
No. Most systems are designed to run with all the vents open. Closing several raises the pressure in the ducts, which can cut the airflow, freeze the coil and make the ducts noisy.
Can a frozen coil cause weak airflow?
Yes. The ice blocks the air going through the coil. Set the thermostat to "Off" and the fan to "On" until it thaws, replace the filter and call if it freezes again.
How do technicians fix weak airflow?
They check the blower, the coil and the pressure in the ducts, then look for leaky or crushed ducts and closed dampers. Sealing ducts or adding a return often helps.
