Short answer
Lift the tank lid. If the chain came off the handle arm, hook it back with a little slack. If the whole handle wobbles, tighten the nut inside the tank behind the handle. On most toilets it is reverse threaded, so turn it counterclockwise to tighten, and only snug it. If the arm is broken or corroded, replace the handle with one that matches the mount.
How to fix a loose toilet handle
1The handle flops and nothing happens
You press it and it hangs loose, or the flush is half-hearted. The fix is inside the tank.
Read all the steps
- The handle flops and nothing happens. You press it and it hangs loose, or the flush is half-hearted. The fix is inside the tank.
- Lift the lid: is the chain hooked?. The chain links the handle arm to the flapper. If it fell off or the clip broke, the handle lifts nothing.
- Hook the chain with a little slack. Clip it to the hole in the arm that leaves about half an inch of slack. Too tight holds the flapper open; too loose barely lifts it.
- Tighten the nut behind the handle. It is inside the tank, on the handle shaft. Most are reverse threaded: turn it counterclockwise to tighten. Snug only.
- Flush to test. Press the handle: it should feel firm and lift the flapper all the way. Put the lid back.
- Still not fixed? Call a plumber Especially if: the handle and chain work, but the flush is still weak or will not stop.

If the handle or the arm is broken
Buy a handle that matches your toilet: front mount, side mount or angle mount. Take the old one to the store, or look for the model number stamped inside the tank. Unhook the chain, remove the nut, slide the old handle out and the new one in, then set the chain slack again.
What not to do
- Do not crank the nut hard. Plastic threads strip and the tank can crack.
- Do not replace the chain with wire or string: they kink and catch under the flapper.
- Do not get used to holding the handle down. If you have to, the chain is too long.
When to call a plumber
- The handle and chain work, but the flush is still weak or will not stop.
- The tank is cracked around the handle hole.
- The nut is fused with corrosion and will not turn.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my toilet handle loose?
The nut that holds it inside the tank works loose over time. Tighten it by hand; on most toilets it turns counterclockwise to tighten because it is reverse threaded.
Why does my toilet handle not flush?
Usually the chain came off the handle arm or has too much slack. It can also be a broken arm or a stiff handle.
Which way do you tighten a toilet handle nut?
On most toilets, counterclockwise as you look at the nut from inside the tank. If it does not snug up that way, your handle has standard threads: turn it clockwise.
Why do I have to hold the handle down to flush?
The chain is too long, so the flapper drops before the tank empties. Shorten it to about half an inch of slack.
Are toilet handles universal?
Many are sold as universal, but they come in front, side and angle mounts with different arm lengths. Bring the old one to the store to match it.
